PERSONAL DETAIL
Hugh was born in
Toronto and received his education in Toronto, Ottawa and Dublin, Ireland (economics,
political science) before studying law at the University of Windsor.
Hugh was employed by
the federal government from 1975 until 1985 in a number of senior level positions
(Personnel and Management Practices) at the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources.
He left the federal government to join McLean & Kerr in 1985 where he
practices
litigation and alternative dispute resolution (ADR).
Hugh acts for private
and public corporations, associations and individuals at all levels of Court in
the following areas:

Insurance
Hugh acts for insurers, individuals, associations and companies with insurance
related issues. He has vast experience in all areas of insurance matters
related to policies of insurance for home and business owners, tenants, life,
commercial, condominium association, boat owners, etc..

Employment
and Labour Relations Hugh has experience in these areas both as a former
manager in and consultant to the federal government as well as a legal advisor
and litigator. He represents both employers and employees in a full range of employment
issues and matters.

Personal
Injury Hugh represents individuals who have suffered serious or catastrophic
injuries arising from a number of accidental sources including motor vehicle,
fires, product design, dog bites, slips and falls, etc.

Commercial
Hugh represents individuals as well as private and public corporations with
respect to commercial contracts and transactions
|
 |
Construction
and Contractor Negligence Hugh represents contractors,
insurance companies, individuals, corporations, associations and other groups
on matters related to construction, construction defects and building repair/restoration
arising out of such defects.

Environmental
Oil and chemical spills or escapes, mold infestations, UFFI, asbestos, etc..
All these, as well as many other pollutants or noxious substances, can cause injury,
loss or damage. Hugh
has considerable experience in litigating such matters.

Alternative
Dispute Resolution Hugh believes that litigation is only one means by
which to resolve legal disputes. It can be, but is not necessarily, the most
effective or appropriate means by which to resolve a dispute. Hugh has trained
as a mediator in Canada and in the U.S., is an active member of the Ontario Mandatory
Mediation Program and is on both the Toronto panel of mediators.
He has participated in hundreds of mediations both as the mediator and as counsel.
Hugh has instructed in The Law for Mediators course at Toronto.
